About ASC

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is an independent, non-profit organisation, which sets global standards for responsible aquaculture. ASC promotes responsible aquaculture to consumers through the use of its logo on certified products.

The aquaculture industry is growing strongly and is already supplying more than half of all seafood consumed worldwide, but this growing demand increases the environmental and social footprint associated with this expansion. The ASC certification and labelling programme incentivises improved farming practices by promoting the benefits of responsibly farmed seafood in the market to encourage industry towards achieving environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

The ASC is currently seeking an Outreach Manager to develop and support ASC improvement work and certification uptake of aquaculture farms in Indonesia. This will involve educating producers and providing them with a framework for improvement in order to achieve certification. 

Main responsibilities 

  • Act as the on the ground representative of ASC and promote the ASC certification and labelling programme in Indonesia;
  • Coordinate the various activities under the Walton grant, aimed at development and rollout of improvement tools for producers and joint activities of ASC and FTUSA;
  • Act as the local liaison for ASC with MMAF and the activities that will be jointly identified;
  • Answer questions from producers (aquaculture farmers, processors) around ASC Standards, CoC, certification methodology (multi-site, group) and certification process;
  • Deliver workshops for producers (max. half day) on ASC certification & labelling programme covering:
    – ASC Standards;
    – CoC;
    – Certification methodology;
    – Certification process and key requirements needed in order to prepare for certification audit
  • Facilitate the translation of key ASC materials into local languages such as the ASC Shrimp Standard and other guidance materials

Required skills and experience

  • Fluent in spoken and written English and Bahasa Indonesia
  • Relevant qualifications and substantial experience working in this sector
  • Experience in working with (aquaculture) producers e.g. conducting workshops, training
  • An established network within the seafood sector and government in Indonesia whilst representing the ASC programme and its core values in a credible and independent manner
  • An understanding of global issues in the seafood sustainability and the role of certification, but bringing a strong passion to build support for international programmes from within Indonesia
  • Proven stakeholder engagement and (project) management experience
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team, but also the skills and character to work remotely
  • Flexibility for occasional travel and ad hoc events
  • A personality that allows pro-active, independent and result-oriented operation and the ability to interact with diverse personalities at all levels of the supply chain and government

We would especially like to talk to you about this role if you have any of the following experience;

  • A track record of training producers against the ASC and/or CBIB Standard
  • Experience of implementing ASC and/or CBIB certification at farm level
  • Having completed ASC auditor training / having conducted ASC and/or CBIB audits
