Japan Celebrates Largest Ever Sustainable Seafood Week

October 30, 2018

Last week Japan celebrated its largest ever Sustainable Seafood Week, and it was a chance for quizzes, comedy and seafood-themed hats (yes, you read that correctly).

This was the fifth time that the ASC had teamed up with the MSC to organize a Sustainable Seafood Week in Japan, where awareness of the importance of responsible caught seafood is going from strength to strength. This year’s week was supported by 63 Japanese businesses.

There was a particular focus on educating younger people about the importance of choosing seafood products that have been produced responsible with a number of events in schools.

The week officially lasted from 13 – 21 October, but the fun had already started before then with an event at the Kasai Waterfront Park in Tokyo. Over 200 children learned about sustainable seafood before taking part in a quiz. They were ably supported by the ASC’s General Manager in Japan, Koji Yamamoto, wearing a very fashionable ASC-certified shrimp hat – check him out below!

The week officially began with an event in Kyoto Central Market as part of the Kyoto International Film and Art Festival. The festival held a programme of events about the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. At this event a talk show was hosted by one half of popular Japanese comedy duo Cocorico, Naoki Tanaka. Over 200 people attended and took part in a lively and interesting discussion.

“Seafood has always been important in Japan, but the success of this week shows that how seafood is produced is also becoming very important to lots of people,” said Koji Yamamoto. “It was especially promising to see so many children get involved with the events, learning from a young age how important it is to know where your seafood comes from. The ASC will continue to work with the MSC to raise the profile of responsibly-sourced seafood in Japan, and support those responsible producers.”

Events carried on for the rest of the week, taking place in Kyoto, Fukushima, Aichi, Tokyo and Osaka, and involving local communities and schools. These events included quizzes, lectures and games at local schools. Family cooking classes also provided inspiration for delicious new ways to enjoy responsibly-sourced seafood.
