Standards and Certification Coordinator

Marcelo joined ASC in March 2018 as Standards and Certification Coordinator. Marcelo holds a Bachelor degree in Aquaculture and a Post Graduate Diploma in International Trade, Business, and Commerce from Escuela Superior Politecnica del Litoral, Ecuador. He also studied for a Masters in Food Science at the Ghent and Leuven Universities in Belgium. Marcelo started his career in the shrimp industry in 1997 as a Farm Manager and also carried out his thesis research on improving the diet contains for shrimp broodstock.

Over the past 20 years, Marcelo has gained extensive experience as a Quality Assurance Manager in the fresh and frozen fish industry. He has served as Product Integrity Manager in an Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified tuna company, and as Coordinator of MSC implementation in fisheries and sustainable seafood in Asia, Europe and Oceania. In 2014, Marcelo founded his international advisory company called seafoodmatter, specialising in integrated quality management, responsible aquaculture and fishery sourcing, tracking and tracing, and seafood supply chain management. Marcelo has been advising large retail companies, seafood producers, seafood industry, governments and NGOs in application and improvement of responsible sourcing as well as sustainable seafood matter in their supply chain. As a lead assessor, Marcelo has carried out more than 200 combined assessments of MSC Chain of Custody and ASC farms as well as assessments of labour and working conditions in the seafood supply chain. In his free time, he enjoys running, swimming, cooking, and diving.
