The initial eight ASC standards are the outcome of numerous multi-stakeholder round-tables, known as the Aquaculture Dialogues, initiated and coordinated by the WWF.

Universal, open and inclusive, the Dialogues included more than 2,000 farmers, processors, retailers and foodservice operators, NGOs, scientist, government agencies and other important aquaculture stakeholders. The initial eight ASC standards were chosen because of their potential impact on the environment and society, their market value and the extent to which they are traded internationally or their potential for such trade.
